EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today challenged candidates in Alberta's provincial election to support the goal of eliminating provincial income tax. At a press conference at the Legislature, CTF-Alberta director John Carpay used a chainsaw to destroy a 4 x 5 foot provincial income tax form. The CTF is challenging candidates in Alberta's 83 ridings to take the Income Tax Freedom Pledge. Responses will be released prior to the March 12 election.
On February 20th, the CTF released a study by Dr. Jean-Francois Wen of the University of Calgary economics department which shows that income tax can be eliminated as early as 2015 if the government controls its spending and puts 50% of oil and gas revenues into the Heritage Fund. Once the Heritage Fund grows to about $55 billion, it will produce enough income to replace what the government would take from Albertans in income tax. If built up to this level, the Heritage Fund can continue providing income for future generations long after Alberta runs out of oil and gas.
In a letter sent to candidates, provincial director John Carpay writes, "Albertans are entitled to benefit from debt elimination by paying less tax- The elimination of Alberta's debt is not a license to open tax spending taps."
Carpay added, "Income tax freedom will leave more money in the pockets of Albertans to spend, save or invest as they choose. It will benefit all Albertans by attracting highly skilled and highly paid workers, and new businesses, investment, and jobs."
The CTF wants to encourage debate on income tax elimination, and will pursue this goal during and after the provincial election campaign.
